The Suburban Hypebeast: A New Breed of Hoodlum

Over the past two years, I’ve noticed a new trend in my neck of the woods. Those little obnoxious teenagers that everyone loves so much have been changing and mutating. These kids used to wear $10 ironic shirts they got at Target and a sports hat. Now all of a sudden, they’re wearing shirts and snapbacks from Obey, Supreme, Diamond Supply, Crooks & Castles, and all sorts of other streetwear brands. Where did that come from? Where are kids seeing this stuff that makes them want to buy it? And where the hell are they getting the money for all this gear?

Congrats, kid. Your mom bought you a G-Shock. Now get the fuck off my lawn.

I don't really get it. Bodacious Space Pirates was a real hit when it aired back in 2012. And yet, despite a plucky cast of female characters (oh, there were some guys there, too), it didn't get a lot of interest on the merchandise side. The outlook was promising when Good Smile Company announced their Nendoroid version of main character Marika Katou and Cospa released a couple GraPhigs, but after that it got quiet really fast. Even AmiAmi Zero seems to have stalled on releasing their series of mini figures. And what was missing most, outside of the numerous garage kits, was an eye-catching scale figure.

Latest magazine scans show that Amakuni and Hobby Japan plan to rectify that little oversight with a new 1/8 scale figure of Marika. This is a really dynamic looking piece featuring Marika charging into action with saber and gun in hand. Really couldn't ask for a better scale figure of the series heroine. Of course getting it won't be so easy. This coveted treasure will be a Hobby Japan exclusive with Japanese orders going up soon. She's expected to be released between January and February 2014, over a year and half after the series ended, at a price of ¥9,800.

Fun Publication's Transformers Collectors Club has announced the fifth figure in their 2014 Subscription Service 2.0 to be the War for Cybertron game's version of Barricade. With all the talk of Fall of Cybertron game characters getting figures it's easy to forget that there's a number of characters left unmade from the previous game.

Barricade will be joining the previously previewed Treadshot, and already announced, but unseen, Fisitron, Chromedome, and Roadbuster. He'll be made using the just released Beast Hunters Prowl figure mold. I have to admit that they did a pretty good job of converting the Prowl figure over is a pretty convincing way just by changing the paint.

With this only the sixth subscription character and seventh bonus character are left to announce. Over the next four weeks they'll be revealing the remaining figures.

Earlier today we saw scans that showed S.H. Figuarts Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus painted for the first time. Now that we have all five Sailor Scouts assembles and painted, Bandai has given us this wonderful group shot of all the figures posing. If only Tuxedo Mask could be hanging out in the background!

While Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus won't be available until 2014, S. H. Figuarts Sailor Mars is still being released in 2013. As previously reported, Mars will be coming out in December. Now, Bandai has just announced that pre-orders will officially open on September 2.

For ¥4,410, the Sailor Mars figure will come with three interchangeable faces, three interchangeable left wrist parts, five interchangeable right wrist parts, one ofuda and stand. While September 2 is two weeks away, you can pre-order the Sailor Mars figure now at J-List.

OK, about an hour ago the internet broke in half with the major news that Ben Affleck will play Batman in the next "Superman: Man of Steel" movie sequel, which is slated to come out around July 17th, 2015.

Ben Affleck, of course, isn't new to the superhero genre. He previously starred as the blind Marvel Comics hero Daredevil (2003) and he even sort-of played "Superman" in the George Reeves Bio Movie, "Hollywoodland" (2006 - pretty good movie too). Hey wait! Is Ben Affleck the very first Actor in film history who will have played both Superman AND Batman? Cool!
