Weekend To-Do List

  1. Play: The Last of Us and Earthbound. One is a PS3 post-apocalyptic survival horror/stealth/action game that critics are praising as one of the best games of this console generation. The other is a Wii U Virtual Console download of the quirky SNES retro RPG that fans have been begging Nintendo to re-release in some form or another for years. Interestingly, both of these games start off with you playing as kids who have been awoken in the middle of the night due to a strange unnatural occurrence.
  2. Read: The Last Policeman by Dan H. Winters. “What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die? Detective Hank Palace has asked this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. Several kilometers wide, it’s on a collision course with planet Earth, with just six precious months until impact." This is the first in a trilogy and it’s already been optioned as a TV show. The sequel, Countdown City, just dropped a few days ago and looks to be just as bananas as the first one.
  3. Watch: Pacific Rim. Fan favorite Guillermo Del Toro’s big budget love letter to giant robots and Kaiju monsters. Sadly, this flick didn’t stack up against -of all things- family comedy Grown-Ups 2. Hopefully it takes number one this weekend and restores our faith in humanity.
  4. Listen: Volume = FF by Double Hex. Boston based chiptune artist does chiptune covers of songs by local Boston bands and even shares the profits with them from the record sales. Preview the 4-track EP on Bandcamp where you can buy it for just $4.

Have an awesome weekend!

SDCC 2013: Bishoujo Mara Jade early sculpt revealed

Early Friday morning at San Diego Comic Con, four Star Wars merchandise makers (Kotobukiya, eFX, Gentle Giant and Sideshow Collectibles) were part of a panel giving an update on their Star Wars wares. While the panel mainly covered collectibles already announced or revealed in each company's respective booths, Kotobukiya snuck in one surprise during their part of the presentation: the first glance at the sculpt for Bishoujo Mara Jade.

Mara is still on track for a February 2014 release in North America, and we've seen her illustration before, so it appears the early version of the sculpt is pretty much the same as Shunya Yamashita's drawing. The extended left hand and cape look slightly different, and her head seems to be facing a little more inward, but keep in mind that this is a very early version and thus subject to a whole lot of revising. My guess is we'll see her in a more refined form around New York Comic Con in October, if not sometime before then.

SDCC 2013: Sideshow Collectibles

Sideshow Collectibles' display of high detailed statues and figures at SDCC came from comics, movies and some original work. There were many Star Wars figures and statues like Darth Malgus, Snowtrooper, Chewbacca, Darth Maul and Obi Wan Kenobi. There were also many other Star Wars figures set up in action scenes, like one display showing Han Solo and Darth Vader on the planet, Hoth.

For DC, there were some fine statues and figures of Catwoman, classic Superman, Man of Steel Superman, Sinestro, Green Lantern, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Batman. There was also a very freaky Joker bust, and the 1/6th scale Harley Quinn and Joker. There was a nice variety with the Marvel figures out on display.

They had figures of Captain America, Red Skull, Black Widow, Wolverine, Apocalypse, Galactus and Dr. Doom. There were also life-sized statues of War Machine and Iron Patriot. For something more cartoonish, there were comiquette statues of Spiderman, Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy by J. Scott Campbell.

Some others out were figures of Conan the Barbarian: Rage of the Undying, Red Sonja, Lord of the Ring's Sauron, Hellboy, and figures from Monster University. Also out were figures from Pacific Rim. They had Gipsy Danger, Knifehead, Striker Eureka and Slattern. There was also  a figure of Johnny Depp's Tonto from Lone Ranger, T-800 from the Terminator series, Transformers' Megatron and a whole display of GI Joe figures.

My favorite figures from Sideshow's booth comes from a new line called Court of the Dead. These figures are not for the faint of heart, but I find them absolutely beautiful. There's Queen of the Dead, The Red Death and Jack the Ripper.
