  • 02/02/12--02:58: Taipei Otaku Shops

  • If you are traveling in Taiwan, dont limit yourself to exploring what you see overground because they got a ton of goodies underground too! The area around Taipei Station has a huge underground shopping mall called Taiwan City Mall. One of the sections is absolutely filled to the brim with Japanese pop culture - anime and otaku goodness.
If you are heading there, get out the station at exit Y17. The address would be 台北市市民大道一段100號
    [gmap=25.04894, 121.51507]

After Culture Japan Night held at the Good Smile Cafe, I went along with a few readers to check out what can be considered as a small scale Akihabara - figures, gundams, gacha, books, magazines, games, dolls and more.

Taipei City Mall is so cool that they even have their own moe character called Rion (莉洋) voiced by Seiyuu Hanazawa kana!

    Gears of War looks awesome.

    Familiar figure is familiar.

With the store manager of Oh!Taku who just happened to be a reader ^o^
You cant miss the shop when you are down there but here is the address anyway.
    台北市市民大道一段100號/66號店(台北地下街內Y17出口附近)

    The mascot character for Oh!Taku.

Then its some nom noms before heading off to a maid cafe!

There is a poll embedded in this article.

I was struck recently when listening to these podcasts back to pack the similarities and contrasts between the two. I really enjoy both of them, and what they have to offer. I’ve been listening to Planned Banter for a while now. You can tell these guys are friends and have really gelled together. Their show covers a [...]

The Matthew Broderick Ferris Bueller Super Bowl ad is available for early viewing … (the extended version) There are “dozens” of references to the film … some are pretty obvious and direct and others are subtle such as … “Behind Broderick on the roller coaster on the Santa Monica Pier is a man wearing Cameron’s [...]

It’s February! Time to let your sappy heart-filled side out to play in the sun. I secretly love Valentine’s Day – the handmade sweet sentimental side, not the Hallmark version. So we’ve been decorating a little bit, crafting a little bit, and brainstorming several fun things to include here on the blog. I’m hoping to [...]

Today is a special day in Bat-History! Actor Victor Buono was born on February 3rd, 1938. Most Batman Fans know him as the Villain, KING TUT, on the 1966 BATMAN Television Series. Later, his KING TUT character made an appearance on the recent BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD cartoon, sort of like an homage, it was pretty cool!

Victor Buono made his very 1st Network TV acting appearance playing a bearded Beatnik named "Bongo Benny" on the 77 SUNSET STRIP series. After many other TV appearances, on various programs, he landed the role of "Edwin Flagg" in a major motion picture, "Who Killed Baby Jane?". He starred opposite 2 extremely talented Actresses, Betty Davis and Joan Crawford. For his role in this movie he was nominated for an Oscar! Over the next 8 or so years he appeared in many other movies. One of my favorites was the 1970's "Beneath The Planet of The Apes".

He then went on to doing many different appearances on various TV Shows of the 70's. Sadly, he died very young at the age of only 43 on January 1st, 1982. He was known to be extremely generous and is missed by many the world over.

As a pretty serious Batman Toy Collector I also love finding strange thing to add to my collection. Shown here are some reference photos I gathered as an example. The 1st item is a Children's BATMAN Restaurant Menu from the 1960's. This item is ultra-rare & I have no idea where it was used but the graphics are extremely cool!

Next-up is an unofficial "bootleg" item. it's an extremely weird "Robin, The Boy Wonder" figure. It sort of reminds me of a Kitschy Troll Doll because, it's so cheesy-trashy, that it's fun, ha! Speaking of cool the 3rd pic shows us a Vintage Batman Toy sold in the UK. It's called the BATMAN BATARANG Bagatelle. It was made by MARX ( an American Toy Company ) but was only sold in England, extremely RARE! I love the original box almost as much as the toy!

Now, for the last item, you must be wondering, "What is that crazy thing?". Well, this is a 1966 Batman BAT-CHUTE! What you did is put this thing on the back of your Bicycle & when you switch a lever a large drag-shoot ( or parachute ) would burst out! Yes, the original 1966 Batmobile Car had this device on the TV Show & kids loved it!
